folklore

Terra Folk was born out of inspiration and a little bit of frustration. As a graphic designer, I am inspired by the editorial photography that pairs realistic miniature figures in fun, unexpected settings. I love the whimsy and play on scale! Being a closet crafter and plant lover, I attended a terrarium making class my niece hosted. I became obsessed with making terrariums for myself and as gifts. I didn't want to use the little plastic toy figures that are commonly used, but more realistic people doing everyday things in a tiny habitat that I created. I sought out miniature railroad figurines. You can't just stand those little people up, they need to be anchored to something or glued to a rock. I turned to gluing toothpicks and skewers  so that they could be positioned wherever I wanted. I tried many different epoxy glues, glue guns, etc. and after time, many failed. I was frustrated by the time and effort I had to put in to my creative outlet. There must have been an easier solution but I couldn't find one.

I teamed up with a reputable railroad model artist and created Terra Folk, made with an attached stem, so that others can enjoy creating their own miniature habitats without the frustration or time involved in crafting. They are hand carved, cast in pewter and hand painted by local artisans in the US. The hair and skin color can be customized, making them even more unique.
